Unity Church of the Hills – Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary to perform in Austin on June 2, 2011
Yarrow’s songwriting helped to create some of Peter, Paul and Mary’s most famous songs, including “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” “Day is Done,” “Light One Candle,” and “The Great Mandala.” As a member of that folk music trio, he earned a 1996 Emmy nomination for the Great Performances special “LifeLines Live,” a highly-acclaimed celebration of folk music, with their musical mentors, contemporaries and a new generation of singer/songwriters. Yarrow was instrumental in founding the New Folks Concert series at both the Newport Folk Festival and the Kerrville Folk Festival. His work at Kerrville has been called his “most important achievement in this arena.”
Those who grew up with “Puff The Magic Dragon” will not want to miss bringing their children and grandchildren for the finale—a sing-along with Peter at the end of the concert. (Childcare is available by reservation.)
The concert will benefit What If It Really Works?, a private nonprofit whose mission is to produce educational programs that inform people about advances in spirituality, consciousness, and science. Peter Yarrow has been associated with the organization since its inception in 2003, when the show began broadcasting on KOTO radio in Telluride, Colorado.
The concert coincides with Peter’s birthday and his annual appearance at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Concertgoers will have a great opportunity to own a piece of folk history, as Peter will be personally auctioning off one of his guitars (which will include a drawing and his signature on the guitar) at the event. He will also auction off one large concert poster, which was designed by the famous graphic designer Milton Glaser. Both Yarrow and Glaser will have signed the poster for the auction winner.
