Austin Pets Alive! (APA!), founded in 1997, is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to stopping the killing of Austin’s adoptable dogs and cats.
Today, we are a grassroots group of volunteers, led by Emancipet founder, Dr. Ellen Jefferson, who want to see the end of the killing of the homeless pets in Austin, Central Texas, and the entire country. APA is leading the charge towards No Kill by energizing the public and breaking down myths about sheltered pets. APA believes that actions speak louder than words and is backing up the No Kill rhetoric with lifesaving programs designed to save the animals most likely to die at kill shelters.
Austin Pets Alive! saved over 11,500 lives from certain death at the City shelter since 2008.
Austin Pets Alive! depends on generous donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations to fund our programs, supplies, and operational expenses. APA! provides animals in its program with food, shelter, veterinary care, obedience training and the promotion and matching necessary to find a forever family.
A foster home is a temporary living situation for pets in our program while they are awaiting placement in a permanent home or to move into one of our overnight adoption programs. Foster families provide shelter, food, care and love. The number of animals we can save depends entirely on the number of people who open their homes and hearts to foster them.
The future of APA! lies largely with its volunteers. We are all working for the animals. Volunteering with Austin Pets Alive! can be as simple and easy as standing under a tent for two hours at some of Austin’s coolest hang-outs.
