As summer blazes on…
I’m reminded of how important it is to align ourselves with the rhythm of the seasons. In Feng Shui, summer is governed by the Fire element—an energy that brings joy, passion, and high activity. But too much Fire can lead to burnout, agitation, and imbalance, especially when our spaces aren’t supporting our health.
After 25 years of working with clients to transform their homes and offices, I’ve found that summer requires special attention to keep your energy light, your sleep restful, and your spirit grounded.
Here are my go-to Feng Shui tips to stay cool, calm, and energized during the summer months.
-
Cool Down the Fire Element
Summer’s Fire energy can be invigorating—but too much can make you feel overwhelmed. I often recommend adding the Water element to tone it down. Personally, I love incorporating cool colors like teal or blue in my decor, or even adding a small tabletop fountain in my entryway to balance out that intensity. It makes such a difference in how your home feels.
-
Clear the South Sector
The South area of your home represents fame, visibility, and is directly linked to Fire. The color is Red. I always advise clients to declutter this zone during summer. Whether it’s removing old papers, dusty décor, or furniture that no longer feels right, clearing space here can instantly lighten the energy. I’ve seen homes shift dramatically just by refreshing this one area.
-
Choose Cooling, Natural Materials
Think about how your space feels during the day. Is it hot, stuffy, overly bright? Try switching to cotton or linen textiles, using bamboo accessories, or painting with softer shades like pale green or sky blue. These bring in Earth and Wood elements, which nourish and calm without fueling the Fire.
-
Let the Kitchen Rest
In summer, the kitchen (already a Fire-heavy space) can become too yang. I recommend lighter meals, less stove use, and keeping sharp utensils out of sight. I’ve noticed that when I simplify the kitchen in summer—opting for salads and smoothies—I not only feel better physically, but the energy of my whole home feels more harmonious.
-
Welcome Morning Energy
One of my favorite rituals is opening the windows early in the day to let in fresh air and Yang Chi. It revitalizes the home and is wonderful for respiratory and heart health. Even five minutes of sunlight and movement of air can shift the entire mood of your space.
-
Create a Restful Sleep Sanctuary
Sleep is sacred—especially in a season where long days and high activity can leave us wired. I always ensure that beds are placed in a stable position, away from direct heat or bright light. If I notice red bedding or busy patterns, I suggest swapping them for cool tones and calming textures. Add lavender, a small fan, or blackout curtains for a sleep space that truly supports restoration.
Final Thoughts
A central Feng Shui principle is to always be grateful. As climate-related disasters continue to impact communities, many are facing profound loss and hardship. Recently, severe flooding in Texas claimed the lives of individuals—including children and beloved pets—who were simply enjoying their summer. Many families are now coping with the devastation of damaged homes and disrupted lives. Our hearts go out to all who are grieving and recovering. May their health, homes, and sense of peace be gently restored in the days to come.
Summer is a beautiful season of expansion, joy, and connection—but it also calls for balance. By aligning your environment with Feng Shui principles, you can feel more grounded, energized, and well throughout the season. This is also a perfect time for rest and renewal, so choose a place you love and give yourself space to enjoy it. It’s good for the body, mind, and spirit.
